A Plane with Dead Passengers Kept Flying 4 Hours!

10 Nov 2025

Recently, the internet once again recalled a blood-chilling story – a ghost plane flew for almost four hours with dead people on board... the details of the story are very sad, and what is most shocking is that there are quite a lot of such strange, and sometimes mystical, stories. And the scariest part is – they are all real!

“Ghost Plane” With Dead Passengers

In 1999, a private Learjet carrying golf legend Payne Stewart took off from Orlando to Dallas. On board were six people: Stewart, his agent, a golf course architect, a former quarterback, and two pilots. At first, everything went as usual — until at an altitude of 7,000 meters communication was lost. The plane continued flying on autopilot, while all passengers and crew remained unconscious. For almost four hours, the “silent flight” drifted over the United States. Attempts to intercept it were unsuccessful…

1 (9).jpg?format=webp@grunge.com

Eventually, the fuel ran out, and the plane crashed in South Dakota, all six people were found dead. Investigation showed that sudden cabin depressurization caused hypoxia — a lack of oxygen that knocked out passengers and pilots. The autopilot kept the course until the very last drop of fuel…Today, a memorial stands at the crash site, and Payne Stewart was posthumously inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Mary Celeste – The Crewless Ship…

In December 1872, the American ship Mary Celeste was discovered in the Atlantic. It was drifting almost empty, with fully stocked supplies: food, tools, and the crew’s personal belongings remained in place. There were no people — all ten on board had disappeared… No bodies, no signs of struggle, no storm capable of taking them away were found.

2 (10).jpg?format=webp

@iflhistory.com

The story of Mary Celeste gave rise to hundreds of theories: from pirate attacks and sea storms to paranormal explanations… Some researchers claim that strange phenomena may have occurred on the ship, causing mass panic among the crew. The mystery remains unsolved to this day…

The Sunken Ghost Schooner

F.J. King — a three-masted cargo schooner that sank in Lake Michigan over 130 years ago. Its remains were discovered only recently, almost fully preserved, immediately attracting the attention of researchers and mystery enthusiasts. Legends say the schooner sometimes appears in the fog, as if moving by itself, without a crew.

3 (9).jpg?format=webp

@Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association/Brendon Baillod

Witnesses describe strange lights on board and silence broken only by the creaking of wooden boards. Over decades, stories of F.J. King’s appearances have been passed down, and as we know — there is no smoke without fire…

Did They Die in Terror?!

SS Ourang Medan is one of the most terrifying maritime incidents. In 1947, the ship, traveling from Indonesia, sent a distress signal: “All officers are dead, I am dying.” When the rescue team arrived, they found all crew members dead, with horrifying facial expressions — as if they had died in terror.

4 (8).jpg?format=webp

@The Unknown; But Not Hidden/facebook.com

The cause of the tragedy was never precisely determined. Some link it to chemical leaks, others to paranormal phenomena. The ship soon exploded and sank, leaving more questions than answers…

The Mystery of the Empty Ship

The Taiwanese cargo ship High Aim 6 went missing in the Sea of Japan… A few days later it was found drifting but completely empty: all crew members had vanished without a trace.

Screenshot_3.jpg?format=webp

@fliqkr.com

The vessel was intact, the cargo was in place but no one was on board. That is, there was no attack, no signs of panic or escape from the ship… This is one of the real “ghost ships,” and its story is still discussed among sailors and beyond…

Ghosts on Board, Seen by Many…

This is one of those cases that still scares almost everyone in aviation… Eastern Air Lines Flight 401 from New York to Miami in 1972 ended in a true tragedy — and, as it was later said, with “ghosts on board.” On the night of December 29, the Lockheed L-1011 was approaching for landing when the crew faced a small, seemingly minor problem: the nose landing gear indicator did not light up. The pilots focused entirely on the light instead of monitoring altitude. And at that moment, the plane began to descend slowly… straight into the Florida Everglades.

Screenshot_4.jpg?format=webp@thisdayinaviation.com

There were 176 people on board, 101 died… but about 75 passengers and crew miraculously survived. The catastrophe shocked everyone—and left behind strange stories. Some pilots and airline staff claimed that after the crash, they saw “shadows” of the deceased pilots in other cockpits and even allegedly heard their voices through instruments…

Flight 19: Disappearance in the Bermuda Triangle

In December 1945, five U.S. Navy training torpedo bombers flew over the Atlantic. Everything was supposed to be a normal flight but soon communication with the planes was lost. Fifteen pilots and instructors simply disappeared.

6 (7).jpg?format=webp@ NAS Fort Lauderdale Museum

A rescue team was sent but it did not return either. No bodies, no wreckage—just the ocean and a mystery that still fuels the imagination and gave rise to Bermuda Triangle legends…

Deadly Underground Train

One of the most frightening and mysterious subway tragedies… In 1975, one of the London Underground trains collided due to a signaling system failure. The driver did not notice the approaching train, and the crash occurred.

7 (8).jpg?format=webp

@london-fire.gov.uk

Dozens of passengers died, and many survivors reported seeing strange shadows in the tunnel and hearing footsteps that could not exist there…

Strange Disappearances on Tarbert Bridge

In the 1970s, several cars and trucks vanished without a trace on a Scottish bridge. Witnesses described fog and darkness that seemed to “disappear along with the vehicles.”

8 (5).jpg?format=webp@thebostoneglobe.com

Later it was discovered that strong winds and river currents created unusual visual effects but at the time, it was a real mystery for the drivers.

The Missing Plane Landed 37 Years Later?!

On July 2, 1955, Pan American Airways Flight 914 departed New York for Miami with 61 people on board—57 passengers and 4 crew members. Three hours later, the plane vanished from radar, and searches found no trace…
Thirty-seven years later, on September 9, 1992, a Caracas airport controller spotted a strange plane on the radar. It turned out to be… the same Flight 914. Radio communication was odd: the crew named the old route and passenger count, and when the date was mentioned, only sharp curses were heard.

9 (5).jpg?format=webp

@The Aviator's Café/facebook.com

The plane allegedly landed, the passengers looked frightened, and within a few minutes, the plane took off and disappeared again. Only a 1955 calendar was found at the scene.
Skeptics consider the story a fabrication: reports about the flight appeared in 1985, long before the “landing.” But the mystery remains: was it a mystical journey through time or just a made-up tale—no one knows. What is frightening is that there are similar stories…

Schoolchildren Who Disappeared Forever?

In 1960, a group of schoolchildren went on a trip in Alabama. On board were 57 students and four adults. Everything went well until the bus disappeared on the way to the museum… No tire tracks, no debris—it seemed the vehicle vanished into thin air. But that was only the beginning…

10 (2).jpg?format=webp@flickr.com

By 1966, on the same road section, accidents occurred: drivers saw a yellow school bus suddenly appear, cut them off, and vanish. Over the next 17 years, 27 similar incidents were recorded…Local residents have different opinions about these events: some are convinced that the bus fell into a time portal and now endlessly roams the roads…

The Ghost of “Rubicon”

On October 21, 1944, the U.S. Navy discovered a drifting ship, “Rubicon,” in the area of the Bermuda Triangle. There were supposed to be more than 300 people on board but the only living creature was… a terrified dog! The ship looked completely intact, with supplies of food and water, and the crew’s belongings in place — but no people.

11 (2).jpg?format=webp@fliqkr.com

The only clue was the missing lifeboats and a torn mooring rope. At the time, newspapers wrote that perhaps the crew panicked during a storm and abandoned the ship… but what could have scared hundreds of experienced sailors so badly that they left everything and vanished without a trace — and where did their bodies go…?

Ghost Ships of the 19th Century

As you can see, the previous and other documented cases of ghost ships appeared as early as the 1800s. In 1840, sailors discovered a drifting vessel called “Rosalie” — with no crew, only a live canary in a cage. And in 1850, the ship “Svéaborg,” where dinner was still on the table in the galley, as if the crew had just stood up and vanished.

12 (4).jpg?format=webp

@news.tulane.edu

These ships became the first mysteries that fueled the legend of the Bermuda Triangle. But what was the cause? Some say sudden rogue waves, others — hurricanes, and some whisper about paranormal phenomena… and one pilot even claimed to have encountered them...

A Flight Into Another Dimension?

On December 4, 1970, pilot Bruce Gernon took off from Andros Island toward Florida. He had flown this route dozens of times but that day the sky above the Bermuda Triangle had a “surprise” in store. At just 300 meters high, he noticed a strange cloud that began to grow and turned into a giant cylinder — a “tunnel.” When the plane entered, the instruments failed, the compass needle spun backward, and bright flashes surrounded the aircraft.

13 (4).jpg?format=webp

@thestoly.com

For nearly a minute, the pilot flew in complete darkness until a light appeared ahead. When they emerged, communication was restored — and it turned out the plane was already near the coast of Miami. The flight took only 47 minutes instead of an hour and a half, and the fuel had barely decreased. No one has ever been able to explain what exactly happened to Bruce Gernon’s plane.

The Last Word — “STENDEC”

On August 2, 1947, a British aircraft, Star Dust, took off from Buenos Aires toward Santiago. The crew was experienced, the route was simple — what could possibly go wrong? Everything went smoothly until the radio operator suddenly sent a strange Morse code message: “STENDEC.” When the dispatcher asked to repeat it, the same word came again — and after that, the connection was lost forever…

14 (3).jpg?format=webp

@naked-science.com

The plane vanished without a trace. No wreckage, no bodies were ever found. Only fifty years later did a glacier in the Andes “release” a piece of the fuselage but the meaning of “STENDEC” remains unknown. Some say it was a coded distress signal, others — a message from “another dimension”…

The Disappearance of “The Flying Tiger”

In the spring of 1962, a Flying Tiger Line aircraft was en route between the Mariana Islands and the Philippines. Thirty minutes after takeoff, the crew requested to climb higher, and an hour and a half later confirmed they would arrive on schedule. That was the last transmission.

15.jpg?format=webp@Wreaths Across America

More than a thousand people, dozens of planes and ships joined the search but not a single trace was ever found. Some sailors from a nearby tanker claimed they saw a bright flash over the ocean — as if a plane exploded. But the area was searched thoroughly — nothing. What happened to “The Flying Tiger” remains a mystery that still puzzles both pilots and UFO enthusiasts.

The Missing Pilot and the Last Phrase — “It’s Not a Plane…”

This story could easily be the plot of a UFO movie — if it weren’t completely real. In October 1978, 19-year-old Australian pilot Frederick Valentich decided to take a short evening flight to King Island — to buy lobsters and return home for a romantic dinner. He dreamed of becoming a pilot, though his exam results were mediocre. The first 60 minutes went smoothly but at 7:06 PM he contacted air traffic control, sounding worried: something large with bright lights was flying above him. The radar showed only his plane in the sky.

16 (4).jpg?format=webp

@Victor Habbick Visions

Frederick reported again: “It flew over me twice… three times, moving at a speed I can’t determine.” Minutes later came his last transmission: “It’s hovering above me… and it’s not a plane.” After that, strange metallic noises filled the radio — and the connection was lost forever...

The Plane That Vanished From the Face of the Earth

On March 8, 2014, a Malaysian Boeing with 239 people on board took off from Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing. Everything was perfect until 40 minutes after takeoff, when the pilots said, “Good night, Malaysian Three Seven Zero.” Then, silence. Moments later, the plane’s systems transmitting signals to the ground were turned off, and it suddenly changed course. It shifted directions multiple times, as if someone were flying it manually. And then it vanished — from radars, from satellites, from the world.

17 (2).jpg?format=webp

@CDN Digital/facebook.com

Only a year and a half later, a piece of the wing washed ashore on Reunion Island — 4,000 kilometers from the presumed crash site. The plane was declared lost. But the answer to the main question — why — remains unknown. And that, to put it mildly, is terrifying...

The Disappearance Worth Millions

In 1969, a cargo Boeing 707 with six people on board took off from Tokyo bound for Los Angeles. What’s intriguing — onboard were 153 paintings by artist Manabu Mabe, valued at over a million dollars…The plane reported everything was normal — and forty minutes later, simply disappeared.

18 (2).jpg?format=webp

@flickr.com

No wreckage, no fuel traces, not even a single fragment of canvas...One theory suggests that the plane was attacked for the paintings but in all the decades since, not one of the artworks has ever resurfaced.

The First Woman to Conquer the Sky — and Vanish Into It…

Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. In 1937, she decided to fly around the world along the equator — but something unexpected happened...Everything was going according to plan until her plane approached the tiny Howland Island. The radio went silent, and Amelia was never heard from again...

19 (1).jpg?format=webp@Getty

The largest search operation in U.S. history began but it yielded nothing. Only decades later were human remains and women’s items found on Nikumaroro Atoll. Perhaps it was Amelia… or whoever flew with her.

The Mysterious Light Near the Old Rails...

Trains have their own share of mystique... In a wooded area of Arkansas, near an old railway, a strange phenomenon still occurs: blue-green lights “float” above the tracks at night.

20 (1).jpg?format=webp

@flickr.com

Locals believe it’s the spirit of a switchman who was decapitated by a train, and the lantern he carried still searches for the way home. The tracks are long gone but the light is still seen... and the creepiest part — there’s no scientific explanation.

The Passenger Who Simply… Disappeared!

Mysterious and shocking stories happen not only to transport itself but also to its passengers... On December 1, 1949, a bus full of people was heading to Bennington, Vermont. Among them was former serviceman James Tetford — a calm, tired man returning home. He was seen dozing by the window but when the bus reached its destination, Tetford was gone…

21 (1).jpg?format=webp@getty

All his belongings were there, his suitcase was in the luggage rack, and a folded timetable lay on the seat. No one noticed him getting up or leaving. James seemed to have simply vanished into thin air...

The Woman Who Vanished in a Tunnel

In 1975, Jackson and Martha Wright were driving through the Lincoln Tunnel from New Jersey to New York. It got stuffy inside, so Jackson stopped to wipe the fogged windows. Martha got out to clean the back window… and was never seen again.

22 (1).jpg?format=webp

@scvhistory.com

Jackson swore there was no sound, no shadow — just emptiness behind the car. The police searched the entire tunnel — no trace. This disappearance remains one of the strangest cases on American highways.

D. B. Cooper — The Man Who Jumped Into Legend

On November 24, 1971 (not 1974, as is often mistaken), a man in a suit and sunglasses hijacked a Boeing 727 belonging to Northwest Orient Airlines. He introduced himself as “Dan Cooper” and demanded $200,000 and four parachutes. After getting what he asked for, he calmly released the passengers and parachuted from the plane over the forests of Oregon — into the stormy night. He was never seen again…

23 (1).jpg?format=webp

@fbi.gov

Neither his body nor the parachute was found. Years later, a boy discovered bundles of bills on the Columbia River — their serial numbers matched the ransom money. The FBI closed the case 45 years later.

The Pilot Who Met a UFO

On November 23, 1953, U.S. Air Force radar picked up an unidentified object over Lake Michigan. An F-89C interceptor was sent from Kinross Air Force Base, piloted by Lieutenant Felix Moncla. Ground control watched as the radar blips of the jet and the UFO drew closer… then merged into one. Seconds later — both disappeared.

24 (1).jpg?format=webp

@gandernewsroom.com

Search efforts lasted for weeks but no wreckage was ever found. To this day, the incident divides opinions — some say Moncla fell victim to a classified military experiment, others insist it was contact with something not of this world.

Sergeant Joseph Lee — The Rocket Man

And finally, a story that’s hard to call a “disappearance,” but its absurdity is unforgettable. In the 1980s, American Sergeant Joseph Lee decided to test whether he could make a homemade jet car. He somehow got his hands on two military - grade rocket boosters and attached them to his Chevrolet. When he hit the launch button, the car shot forward at over 500 km/h and… took off.

25 (1).jpg?format=webp@tunnelram.net

The brief flight ended in tragedy — the car crashed into a cliff, leaving behind only debris. The story became an urban legend but Air Force records do mention an incident involving “unauthorized use of jet engines”...

The Ghost Hitchhiker on Route 66

Perhaps one of the most famous “road legends,” which, as it turned out, is not a legend at all... On an old stretch of the legendary Route 66 between Amarillo, Texas, and Gallup, New Mexico, many drivers have reported seeing a woman in a white dress standing by the roadside with her thumb raised.

26 (1).jpg?format=webp

@flickr.com

A trucker named Dan Wilson told True Ghost Tales in an interview that one night he picked up such a girl. She politely thanked him, said she just needed to “go a little way,” and stared out the window for a long time, as if searching for something in the darkness. When he stopped at a rest area to offer her coffee, the passenger seat was empty. Only the scent of perfume remained, along with a slight chill, as if someone had left the window open…Later, Dan learned that in 1952 a young woman had indeed died on this stretch — her car had skidded on the wet road, and she hadn’t made it out. Since then, it is said, she has been trying to reach home…

James Dean’s Cursed Porsche

Perhaps the most sinister story in Hollywood. Actor James Dean’s sports car, the Porsche 550 Spyder, nicknamed by him “Little Bastard,” became a true symbol of fatal destiny.

27 (1).jpg?format=webp

@artphotolimited.com

After Dean died in this car, its parts were used in other vehicles — and every new owner ended up in accidents… Later, the body of the “Little Bastard” vanished without a trace during transportation… as if the curse continued to live.

The Ghost Camaro of North Carolina

In the 1970s, a young man named Eddie crashed his black Camaro near High Point, North Carolina, and died on the spot.

28 (1).jpg?format=webp

@tommyn0drip/reddit.com

Since then, drivers report strange phenomena: at night, a black Camaro with bright headlights suddenly appears behind them, chasing them for a while, and then vanishes without a trace. Locals are convinced — it is Eddie’s spirit still racing along his favorite roads.

Clinton Road — America’s Creepiest Road

In New Jersey, there is a road that is better left alone at night. Clinton Road is a place where, according to reports, truly strange things happen. Drivers see ghosts and even encounter a phantom truck that suddenly emerges from the darkness.

29 (1).jpg?format=webp@weirdnj.com

Many also believe there is a bridge where, if you throw a coin into the water, a ghost boy returns it…

The Ghost Car at Rose Hill Cemetery

At the old Rose Hill Cemetery in Chicago, a strange black car is often seen slowly driving around at night. Many are convinced the driver is the spirit of an old caretaker who once protected the grounds.

30 (1).jpg?format=webp

@geograph.org.uk

Those who tried to get closer saw the car’s headlights go out, and the vehicle itself dissolve into thin air…

The Curse of the “Golden Eagle” — America’s Most Evil Car

The Dodge 330, produced in 1964 and nicknamed “Golden Eagle,” has a dark reputation. It first served as a police car — and three officers who drove it in turn died under mysterious circumstances.

31 (2).jpg?format=webp@ghostwalks.com

Later, the car passed to private owners, who also soon encountered accidents and misfortunes. American media dubbed it “the most evil car in the country.”

The Ghostly Old Woman in Belchen Tunnel, Switzerland

Although a European story, it has long become known worldwide… Drivers passing through the Belchen Tunnel reported that a gray-haired woman suddenly appeared in the passenger seat, whispering warnings about danger… and then vanished.

32 (1).jpg?format=webp

@flickr.com

Some are convinced it is a spirit saving people from death on that stretch of road.

The Black “Car” — Eastern Europe’s Nightmare

In the 1960s, a legend spread in Eastern Europe about a black “car” that supposedly abducted people right off the streets. Witnesses claimed that either agents or otherworldly beings were behind the wheel.

33 (1).jpg?format=webp

@flickr.com

They said that if such a car stopped nearby, the person would never be seen again. The legend may be a myth but the fear persists to this day…

Route 491 — Formerly Route 666, or the “Devil’s Highway”

This highway runs through Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah, and was once officially called Route 666. After numerous complaints of “bad luck and curses,” the number was changed to 491. According to Urban Legends Mystery & Myth, dozens of drivers reported a mysterious black truck that suddenly appeared behind them, blinding them with headlights, then vanished when they tried to speed away. No cameras, no traces — nothing.

34 (1).jpg?format=webp

@trav/reddit.com

Some also reported a woman in a nightgown appearing late at night. When drivers tried to pick her up, she literally disappeared before their eyes. Others saw a pack of black dogs with glowing eyes running along the roadside. After the route was renamed, the number of accidents reportedly decreased — a fact confirmed by the New Mexico Department of Transportation.

Creepy Truck Stops

Every trucker will tell you that if a rest stop has been by the highway for decades, it has its stories. For example, a roadside diner in southern Tennessee…A driver named Jake remembered an evening when he went in for a snack and then saw a semi-transparent female figure slowly walk through the hall. The waitress, noticing his reaction, calmly said:
“Ah, you probably saw Lydia. She’s been here a long time.”

35 (1).jpg?format=webp@flickr.com

Later, it turned out that in 1947 a young woman died here returning home from her shift. Since then, her silhouette is regularly seen late at night — usually at the same hour when the accident happened.

The Cursed Cargo — Mirrors and Footsteps from the Truck Bed

Truckers often share stories of “unlucky hauls.” One driver from Ohio told Trucking Truth that he was tasked with transporting a collection of old mirrors from a mansion where the owner had recently died. All the way, he felt as if someone was sitting behind him. Several times he heard light footsteps on the truck bed, even though he knew no one was there.

36 (1).jpg?format=webp

@unsplash.com

At a gas station, he saw in the rearview mirror not his reflection but the silhouette of an elderly woman. After that, he abandoned the cargo at the destination and refused payment — just wanting to leave as fast as possible. Later, the antique buyer reported that shadows and handprints sometimes appeared inside one of the mirrors…

Ghosts on the Radio — Strange Signals from the Road

The CB radio is an essential part of every trucker’s life. But sometimes the airwaves deliver eerie surprises. A driver named Ray Hudson told American Trucker that one day he heard a woman singing a lullaby over the radio. The frequency was free, yet the signal was clear. When he asked who was on the line, the woman said: “I am waiting for my son.”

37 (1).jpg?format=webp

@flickr.com

Then the signal cut out. Later, he learned that years before, on the same stretch of road in Virginia, a woman and child had died in an accident. The radio, it turned out, had caught an old signal, “looping” in the air. Some say it was just a strange reflection of radio waves, others believe someone was still calling from the past.

Tunnel with Voices from the Past

On I-70 in Missouri, there is an old tunnel that many drivers try to pass through as quickly as possible. According to the Kansas City Star archive, during the tunnel’s construction in 1963, a worker died when a concrete slab collapsed, and his body could not be fully recovered.

38 (3).jpg?format=webp

@trav/reddit.com

Since then, drivers report unexplained phenomena: sudden drops in temperature, radio static, and the sound of footsteps as if someone is walking along the walls. One driver claimed he heard the words “I am here” and has never driven through that section at night again…

Lost in the Rain — Realizing You’re Going the Wrong Way

Real mystical and terrifying stories from people around the world still happen on the road…On Reddit, one driver shared that he was driving late at night on a deserted country road. Rain poured down, it was dark, and there were no streetlights — visibility was almost zero. He knew the road split into two lanes each way with trees in the middle but in that weather, the markings were impossible to see.

39 (1).jpg?format=webp@trav/reddit.com

Suddenly, headlights appeared — cars were coming straight at him! He barely swerved into the ditch to avoid a head-on collision. Sitting there, trying to understand what happened, he decided to drive along the edge until the nearest intersection. He found a pass, turned — and ran into… a gate. A gate in the middle of the road! He turned back and suddenly realized he had been driving on the correct side the whole time. It was the other cars that were in the wrong place. In the end, the man just sat in his car in the rain, unable to figure out — was it a mistake, coincidence, or some creepy road trap?

The Ghost Car in the Opposite Lane

This story seems like a normal road incident but there is something… off about it. A man was driving on a two-lane highway, overtaking a couple of trucks. He moved into the left lane, passed them, and suddenly saw headlights right in front of him in his lane. The car was coming straight at him. He swerved into the ditch at the last second, heard his wife scream, smelled burning rubber, and his heart raced. Then silence. He was alive…

40 (1).jpg?format=webp

@trav/reddit.com

The trucks he had passed pulled over to check on him. But strangely, the oncoming car was gone. No one had seen it. No traces, no lights in the distance. Just — emptiness. He later said: “I still don’t know what it was. But sometimes, when I drive at night, I feel like the headlights are flashing ahead again…”

Abandoned Towns in Alberta and the Strange Light

One user shared a story about a trip through Alberta, Canada. The road passed by abandoned towns built almost entirely of wood. Many buildings were dilapidated, some burned — likely decades ago. During the drive, the driver noticed an orange light oddly standing out against the heavy rain. It wasn’t like a fire but at the same time, a smell of smoke entered the car.

41 (1).jpg?format=webp@amatravel.com

They tried to air it out but the smell only grew stronger. The scariest part began when they heard screaming and crying. Despite being a believer, the storyteller does not believe in ghosts, yet this moment left him puzzled. In the end, they simply drove away but the sense of unease lingered for a long time.

The Creature on the Road in the Appalachians

Another storyteller recalled a trip with his brother and friends after a day at the lake. They were driving home along a narrow road through cornfields, crossed a bridge over a river, and suddenly saw something standing by the road in the headlights. The “something” looked almost human but its face and eyes were terrifying. Its eyes seemed to glow in the dark, and its features gave the impression that it was trying hard to appear human. The storyteller described chills down his spine and a sense of dread in his stomach.

42 (1).jpg?format=webp

@flickr.com

The brother hit the gas, and the car passed the creature. But for the rest of the drive home, they felt as if it could have pursued them if it wanted. The author notes that, according to rumors, the Appalachian forests still harbor beings that existed long before humans and will likely remain long after…

The Legless Ghost in Wisconsin

A resident of northeastern Wisconsin once shared how he was driving down a rural road late at night — a place usually meant for farm machinery. It was around 1 a.m., fall, thick fog, and total silence. Deep ditches lined the road, surrounded by swampy woods.

43.jpg?format=webp
When the fog cleared a bit, the driver suddenly saw a human figure… with no legs, crawling out of the ditch. It moved in jerky, unnatural motions, almost like a “glitch,” and vanished the moment the car passed by.
Later, a local farmer told him that years ago, a man had died there — his tractor rolled into the ditch and crushed him. Ever since then, people say something still tries to crawl out on foggy nights...

The Creature with Long Arms

The next story sounds like a scene straight from a horror movie. Three people were driving down a narrow country road late at night when something — or someone — darted in front of their car. It moved with inhuman speed: just one long stride, and it had crossed the entire road.

44.jpg?format=webp
Witnesses said it was too tall, with abnormally long arms and legs, and a face that looked “almost” human. One passenger even cried afterward, completely terrified. They compared it to Slenderman — only this one wore jeans and had terrifyingly empty eyes.

The Woman on the San Diego Highway

In the spring of 2002, a couple was driving from San Diego to Redlands. On the side of the road, they noticed a woman with long, straight hair standing next to a smoking car. The hood was up, and she was waving her arms desperately for help.
They couldn’t stop in time, so they took the next exit to turn around.

45.jpg?format=webp

Less than ten minutes later, when they got back — there was no one there. No woman, no car. The road was completely empty. “We told ourselves she must’ve just left but her car didn’t look like it could even start. To this day, I still don’t know who — or what — we saw,” the woman later wrote on Reddit.

The Smell of Flowers Between Cemeteries

In Singapore, local drivers often talk about a certain stretch of road where cemeteries line both sides. While driving there, they suddenly smell frangipani — a flower often linked with death and spirits in Asia.

46.jpg?format=webp
The scent appears out of nowhere, even when all the windows are closed. People say it’s a sign that a female ghost is nearby. Because of that, many drivers avoid stopping or talking while passing through that road at night...

The Dark Road Near Bristol Speedway

A guy from Tennessee once shared how, during a Christmas light show at Bristol Speedway, he and his friend noticed another road nearby — dark, completely empty, and endless, with no lights and no visible end. The way was blocked with caution tape.

47.jpg?format=webp
“We just stood there staring into that darkness,” he recalled. “No sounds, no animals, no wind. Just this gut feeling that if we went down that road… we wouldn’t come back.” He still doesn’t know where that road led or why it was sealed off so carefully.

The Smiling Wolf in the Nevada Desert

A family of four was driving from Las Vegas to Arizona late at night. Near Highway 40, they spotted a huge animal by the roadside — it looked like a wolf, lying down right at the white line, with its head up and paws stretched forward like it was posing.

Everyone in the car saw it. The animal was far too large for a coyote or a dog. The strangest part? It was smiling. Calmly. Almost… humanly. When they turned to look back — the wolf was gone. Stories like that make you think twice before driving alone at night...

The Ghost Soldier of South Carolina

One man on Reddit claimed he saw a person in a gray Confederate uniform standing on the side of a two-lane highway in South Carolina one night. The soldier looked directly toward the road. The driver blinked — and the figure vanished.

“The hair on my neck stood up,” he said. “It felt like someone had just been standing right next to my car, staring straight into my eyes.”

Faceless People on the Northern Canadian Highway

A former policeman from the 1970s once told his son about strange encounters on the highways of northern British Columbia. Once, he saw two people waving by the side of the road. When he stopped — they were gone. But looking into his rearview mirror, he saw the same two figures standing behind his car… with no faces.

Another time, he saw a group of Indigenous women in traditional clothing standing in a field. He waved at them, and they slowly faded away. “I’m not the kind of man who believes in ghosts,” he said. “But if you were there — you’d never drive that road again either.”
After hearing stories like these, it’s hard to see night drives as peaceful adventures… but maybe a little mystery is part of the road’s charm…
